Kossuth Lajos street

The tree-lined Kossuth Lajos utca is one of the pride of Eger.

It is lined with wonderful baroque villa buildings, several of which have recently been renovated. Let's definitely take a walk here!

Next to the bridge of the Eger stream is the Butler house, whose story - similar to the Mikszáth story (Strange marriage) - is very novel.

János Buttler was born in 1773 as the 13th child in a family of 14 children. At the age of 19, he entered into a legal marriage with Count Katalin Dőry with early age exemption. In 1795, the Holy See of Kassa separated them from bed and table, ruling that it was a fault of both of them, which was not the same as declaring a divorce. Buttler applied for this when he was 58 years old, to get rid of alimony and his childless wife. This wish was unsuccessful. He died in 1845.
