Dresch Mihály Alternative Quartet at the Valide Sultan bath ruin
The Dresch Mihály Alternative Quartet is one of the most exciting ensembles in the Hungarian music scene, consistently and confidently pursuing its own path for decades by uniquely blending Hungarian folk music with African-American jazz. The band’s leader, Mihály Dresch—recipient of the Kossuth, Liszt, and Fonogram awards—is a defining figure of Hungarian ethno-jazz, creating a perfect balance between tradition and modernity in his music. The members of the Alternative Quartet—Áron Horváth (cimbalom), Marcell Gyányi (double bass), Ambrus Richter (drums), and Mihály Dresch himself (saxophone)—are outstanding musicians who bring the “Dresch experience” to life at their concerts with dedication, respect, and creativity. Their repertoire features the musical roots of the Carpathian Basin, improvisation, and timeless jazz standards, making each of their performances a unique and unforgettable musical journey on the borderland where folk music and jazz meet.
