Multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter Balázs Szabó founded the Szabó Balázs Bandája in 2009. Over the years, the group has become one of Hungary’s most popular bands, achieving its success through a distinctive sound that blends Hungarian folk roots with chanson-style songwriting, as well as elements of pop, rock, and funk, all enriched by a chamber music sensibility. Their music breaks boundaries and builds genres at the same time.
A defining feature of their work is the tradition of setting poetry to music. In addition to their own original songs, they have released entire albums inspired by the poetry of János Pilinszky and Miklós Radnóti, while also adapting works by other poets such as Krisztián Grecsó and Ferenc Szemlér.
To date, the band has released five studio albums, one live album, and a concert film. Their 2014 album Élet elvitelre (“Life to Go”) received the Fonogram Award for Alternative Album of the Year. Among their many accolades, Balázs Szabó was named Male Performer of the Year at the 2016 Petőfi Music Awards.
