Huun Huur Tu concert (Mezőkövesd)

Expired event

This concert in Mezőkövesd can be one of the exciting program points of a weekend in Eger!

The Huun-Huur-Tu ensemble is the best-known representative of the traditional Tuva throat style, that peculiar singing technique in which a singer sings two or three notes at the same time.

The ensemble was founded in 1992 in the autonomous republic of Russia, Tuva. However, their name was only recorded later after an American tour. Tuva is located in southern Siberia on the Mongolian border. Nature, the environment, and animals play a central role in the songs of the Turkic-Mongolian speaking Tuvins who live here, just as in their lives. Huun-Huur-Tu's founding members Kaigal-ool Khovalyg, Sayan Bapa, Alexander Bapa and Albert Kuvezin, like other musicians, worked in various state ensembles in Soviet times, which provided a living for young musicians for decades, but as the music business was increasingly privatized, many musicians decided to leave these bands and start their own bands.

At the end of the 1980s, the American musicologist Ted Levin investigated the research work in Tuva, primarily throat singing, or "xöömei". It was then that he met the members of Huun-Huur-Tu, whom he later invited to the United States. The musicians were initially disturbed by the fact that their audience was not interested in the music, but in their strange singing technique, which was almost completely unknown to the world until then. However, they soon became so popular that they worked with Frank Zappa, then the Kronos Quartet, Ry Cooder, the Chieftains and L. Shankar.

Most traditional Tuva music is performed by a solo singer or musician, but Huun-Huur-Tu performs these old songs and melodies accompanied by home-made traditional instruments with an eclectic arrangement.

"This is an unknown, yet easy to understand, an otherworldly but deeply spiritual music rooted in the sounds of nature."
