Bágyi Balázs New Quartet concert at the Valide Sultan bath ruin
The Bágyi Balázs New Quartet is one of the most successful and well-known ensembles in the Hungarian jazz scene, founded in 2013 by internationally recognized jazz drummer and composer Balázs Bágyi. The band members—Sándor Soso Lakatos (saxophone), Dezső Oláh (piano), Péter Oláh (double bass), and Balázs Bágyi (drums)—are outstanding artists of Hungary’s mid-generation jazz musicians, regularly performing at prestigious jazz festivals across Europe and Asia, as well as in countries such as China, Jordan, and Mexico. The quartet’s music is dominated by contemporary, acoustic jazz rooted in post-bop, enriched with classical and Gypsy music influences. Their repertoire primarily features original compositions by Balázs Bágyi, who was named Composer of the Year in 2016, and whose album Homage to Shakespeare won the Gramofon Award. With their fresh, dynamic performances and high-level improvisation, the Bágyi Balázs New Quartet is a defining presence in contemporary Hungarian jazz.
