March 15: Hungary’s National Holiday

March 15 is one of Hungary’s most important national holidays.

It commemorates the outbreak of the 1848–49 revolution and war of independence. On this day, Hungarians celebrate freedom, national independence, and the birth of a modern, civic (constitutional) Hungary.

Stores are closed on this day, but restaurants and museums generally remain open during their usual hours.

On March 15, 1848—part of the wider wave of European revolutions—a largely bloodless uprising began in Pest-Buda against Habsburg rule. A group of radical young reformers, associated with the poet Sándor Petőfi, issued the “12 Points,” demanding (among other things) freedom of the press, civil rights, and equality. Petőfi’s patriotic poem National Song (Nemzeti dal) was recited publicly and helped mobilize large crowds. What started as a peaceful but determined movement soon grew into a nationwide fight for independence against the Austrian Empire.

Although the war of independence was eventually crushed about a year and a half later—after Austrian forces were aided by the Russian imperial army—March 15 became a powerful symbol of Hungarian national identity and the desire for freedom.

For many Hungarians, it stands for courage, national unity, and the enduring belief that the nation should decide its own fate. It is remembered as proof that Hungarians were willing to stand up for their sovereignty even against overwhelming odds.

The main symbol of the holiday is the kokárda, a rosette in Hungary’s national colors (red, white, and green), traditionally worn over the heart.

Across the country—and also among Hungarian communities abroad—people attend commemorations with speeches, wreath-laying ceremonies, and historical reenactments (often featuring hussar traditions). The central state ceremonies take place at iconic sites of the 1848 events in Budapest, such as the garden of the Hungarian National Museum and the Buda Castle area.
