Archaeology Day at Eger Castle

Archaeology Day at Eger Castle

This year, the Dobó István Castle Museum will join the national Archaeology Day program organized by the Hungarian Archaeology Association, which is also connected to the European Archaeology Days series of events. The aim of the series of events is to present the scientific work of the past period to the representatives of the profession and the interested public, from the discovery of sites and finds to their scientific processing.

The Dobó István Castle Museum will be waiting for visitors at several locations between June 13-14, 2025, with exciting, interactive programs, exhibition openings, and lectures.

On June 13, visitors can learn about the exciting process of research at the Gyöngyöspata church and the practice of excavation during an excavation open day.

On the same day, visitors can listen to professional lectures in the Dobó Bastion of Eger Castle, which will provide an insight into the latest discoveries taking place in Heves County.

The excavation of the hermitage chapel on Nagy-Eged Hill, which towers above the city of Eger, has already yielded exciting results in many scientific fields. A new exhibition opens at 5:00 p.m. in the Southern Reception Building, entitled Chapel-Research-Community II., which presents numerous artifacts from the excavation. The exhibition can also be viewed the next day with a curatorial tour.

On June 14, visitors to Eger Castle, young and old, can grab a shovel and a pickaxe during interactive activities and try out the tricks of the archaeological profession themselves.

This year’s theme is “Archaeology in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.” According to the association, the relationship between archaeology and artificial intelligence (AI) and the diverse application of modern technologies have brought significant progress in archaeology in recent decades, especially in the fields of field data recording, data processing and presentation of results.

On June 14, in collaboration with the staff of the INNORÉGIÓ Knowledge Center of the Eszterházy Károly Catholic University, you can also hear a lecture at the Varkoch Gate about the practical use of artificial intelligence and digitized surveys to help archaeologists.
