National Holiday

On October 23, Hungary commemorates the beginning of the 1956 revolution and freedom fight, a national uprising that grew out of students’ peaceful demonstration against the communist dictatorship and Soviet occupation in 1956.

On the same day in 1989, the Republic of Hungary was proclaimed, which is why the date is regarded as a dual national holiday in Hungary.

Shops are closed this day with some exception, but the majority of restaurants, pubs and touristic attractions are open as usual.
